Information about the Penny Drive
Just a reminder that the Penny Drive starts this coming Monday and runs for 2 weeks, the last day to bring coins is December 14. American currency only please. Any coin is okay because we go by weight, the winning class wins a prize. Student leadership has decided to split the monies collected between our local soup kitchen and a school that was affected by Hurricane Sandy.
The Salvation Army has put me in touch with the Drum Point Elementary School in Brick, NJ. It is a school that was hard hit by the hurricane. Their enrollment is a little over 500 students. Let's show them what a state in the Midwest can do to help others!

Planet Project
November 5,
2012
Dear Parents,
For the next week and a half,
we will be studying the planets in our Solar System. Students will be working in pairs to research
information about the planets by looking up information in books and on the
Internet. I will give the students time
to work on this in class, but I am also encouraging students to work on this at
home. Students may present their planets
by using pictures and written or typed information displayed on a poster board
or in a book that is created by the students.
Students will be presenting their research on Wednesday, November 21st
beginning at 9:30 AM.

Halloween Party
The kids are getting super excited for our Halloween Party that is scheduled for October 31st beginning at 2:45. The kids will be allowed to get their costumes on about 2:30. During our party we will be enjoying some tasty snacks and decorating our pumpkins that they brought in. Please join us for our party if you are able to attend. We will need help with decorating, passing out treats, and cleaning up after the party. If you are able to bring treats to share, that would be great! Thank you so much! See you soon! Mrs. Austin

Dear Parents,
Each student has set a reading goal for this month. Everyday students are to read for at least 20 minutes which equals 620 total minutes for the month. We have set a class goal for 10,540. Please help us by making sure your child reads each and every day for at least 20 minutes. More than 20 minutes would be greatly appreciated too!! Thanks so much!! Mrs. Austin

The 3rd week is flying by.....
Whoa! I can't believe tomorrow is already Friday! This week has went by so fast. I think it feels that way because we have been working so hard. I can't believe how far we have come in just 3 short weeks! We had our first math test today. The results were wonderful! Tomorrow we will be taking our 2nd spelling test and the 1st end of chapter Treasures test. We will also be MAP testing in math. We took the reading MAP test on Wednesday. You'll learn more about that at our upcoming Parent Night, Thursday, September 20th at 5:45. I look forward to seeing you all there! A parent letter will be going home tomorrow.

Beginning of week 2
Hello students and parents! It is week 2 and boy, we are sure getting into some great routines! I am so pleased how far we have come in such a short time. In reading, we are currently working on comprehension, beginning, middle and end, character and setting. We are doing our very best when answering questions to restate the question in our answers and making sure we use complete sentences that make sense. That's a big deal! In math, we are working on place value and comparing numbers. I was so please to see that everyone had their homework completed this morning from the long weekend! Great job! In writing, we are working on generating ideas for writing personal narratives. We are going to choose from our list to write a story about a small moment. These are a lot of fun to write and read! Don't forget to keep reading each night. A.R. tests can be taken any morning. If you have questions or comments, feel free to contact me! Thank you! Mrs. Austin

Week 1/week 2 Spelling List
These are the words for next Friday, September 7th. Even though it is the second week of school, we will consider this week 1 for our weekly spelling tests. The sheet I will send home on 8/29 will also include 4 dictation sentences. At this point, I will not be grading these sentences, but showing errors. Your child will be asked for correct their mistakes, if any. Later, once students are used to it, I will begin to grade them. I will make you, as well as them, aware of when they will be graded.
Fabulous First Day!!!
Hello 3rd graders and parents! I just want to say how I am impressed with you all! We have such a bright and caring group of kids. Everyone had such great manners and patience today. One of our activities was sitting in a large circle and telling about ourselves. It was so neat to hear about your family, summer, and favorite thing we did today. For the most part, everyone was polite and patient, waiting their turn to speak. Tomorrow we will delving into workbooks in grammar, spelling, and possibly math. We will also be writing about our summer. This will be just a draft or cold write. I look forward to reading all of them! Tomorrow I will also be handing out the spelling list for week 1/week 2. I am combining the weeks because they are both short. The test will be on Friday, September 7th. See you tomorrow:) Mrs. Austin
